“I know your secret, St. Benedict,” St. Rachel announced, cutting off the lie he was about to tell, dead on his lips. “I know about your wife.”

They had been talking for the last hour while the programs ran. St. Rachel, as usual, kept trying all her tricks to get him to reveal something about himself. He thought it was cute; it had always been a fun game for St. Benedict to evade her, but it hit him at that moment that maybe it wasn’t all a game anymore. St. Benedict narrowed his eyes to slits of cold green-blue, a mildly sinister smile painting his lips.

She smiled back proudly. Like she knew she had finally scored a point. “Have I ever told you how much I love that smile? The one you have on right now? Sends shivers down my spine.”

“My wife?” he asked.

“Don’t be coy,” she responded.

“Oh, I’m not,” he assured her. “I’m just waiting for you to give me the reason I don’t slit your throat right now and leave you in the alley out back.”

St. Rachel didn’t look away from his steady gaze, two wolves measuring each other carefully.

“Because without me, your rescue mission fails right here, right now,” she said evenly.

He looked away, tapping a few more commands into the complicated program he was running.

“If you’re wasting your time on rescuing your team, does that mean you’re off the assigned mission then?” St. Rachel asked.

“Not in the slightest. I’m just a little bit delayed is all.”

“But you still believe that this Rune woman can help you find the Masterson files?” she pressed.

“Something like that.”

“But it’s our owner who will end up with them,” she countered. “I’ve been getting the impression that isn’t what you have planned.”

“That’s possible.”

St. Rachel blew out her breath. She shifted in her seat to undo the zipper of her boots with a long, loud zipping sound.

“Do you know why he agreed to buy my contract for this project?”

“You wanted revenge against the Kodiak Company, and you convinced him to lay down a small country’s worth of money for you,” St. Benedict interjected.

“Yes,” she said coldly. “Yes, my secrets are all bared to you. You would think that you would trust me with yours.”

“It was him then, who told you about my wife,” St. Benedict concluded. “No other way you would have found out about her yourself.”

She reached out a hand and laid it firmly on his arm. “Hey. I am here because I want to be, St. Benedict. Despite our natures, I am your friend here. At least as much a friend as people like us can have. I get it: you had a wife you cared about, but what I don’t understand is what this has to do with the Masterson files.”

He stared down at her perfect fingers, debating with himself. “It was because of the Masterson files that I lost her and became what I am today.”

“That’s why you want to find them?”

“That’s why I want to destroy them. Everything else is just gravy.
